If you find a Needle what should you do?
Finding needles in the community are a health and safety concern. Everyone needs to know what to do when a needle/syringe is found in the community. These needles may have been inappropriately discarded or fallen out from rubbish.
In an event of a needle stick injury you must:
HIV and Hepatitis B/C may not be detected for 3 months but some A&E departments will offer treatment for needle stick injuries which may include PEP – Post Exposure Prophylaxis (about 3 months of high dose anti-retroviral therapy).
What to do if you find sharps:
Whenever you find a needle or syringe inform the owner of the building, or if you find it in a public place, inform The Council (environment services) on 020 8825 6000, who will then arrange to collect it.
We advise that members of the public DO NOT attempt to pick up needles & syringes unless there is an immediate danger to you or other people.
