Drugs Intervention Programme (DIP)

In 2003, the Drugs Intervention Programme (DIP) was established to help break the link between drugs and crime. The DIP provides a route out of the criminal justice system for class A drug users and into high intensity support and treatment packages which are targeted at reducing their offending behaviour.

Ealing DIP is a partnership between statutory and voluntary agencies, including the Primary Care Trust, Police, Probation Service, Ealing Council, HM Prison Service and voluntary sector drug treatment providers.

Offenders are picked up by teams working in police custody suites, courts and the probation service and those released from prison. Their needs are assessed by drugs workers and they are supported into suitable treatment and support services.

Ealing DIP Goals:

  • To reduce drug related offending by moving persistent drug using offenders through criminal justice intervention into and through the drug treatment system;
  • To increase the number of adult drug using offenders accessing treatment;
  • To increase the levels of sustained engagement with other services;
  • To integrate drug treatment services for offenders in police stations, in courts and in the community. Crucially, with the aim of improving the co-ordination of aftercare for prisoners following their release;
  • To reduce drug related harm, including drug related deaths;
  • To improve the quality of life of drug using offenders and promote sustainable life change;
